Public holidays in the U.S. commemorate historical events or people that are significant to a state or the country. Most businesses, government institutions and schools take the day off to celebrate. Providing these holidays to employees is mandatory under federal labor law. However, employers are not required to pay any paid time off for these days.
This poster provides an elaborate list of all public holidays afforded to employees in the U.S. Note that while some holidays are granted nationwide, others are only granted in specific states of the U.S. Also, the poster only displays public holidays.; local observances have not been included.
